5 Managing Techniques That Inspire Millennials

Millennials are known for many things and are a hot discussion topic in the media today. They have been called out for killing beer, doorknobs, and even education as we know it! They come off as confusing to many and are coming of age as they enter the workforce. That is exactly why any business owner should know the most effective ways to inspire their Millennial employees!

1. Try to avoid micromanaging.

No one wants to work for a micromanager, especially a Millennial. Millennials prefer to work in a job that enables them to build strong interpersonal relationships with the people they work with. Micromanaging most certainly does not enable these relationships to be built up as they are almost always seen negatively. They crave trust and freedom from their bosses for them to reach their full potential in the workforce.

2. Be as authentic as you can be.

Nothing annoys Millennials more than someone who is ingenuine. Millennials feel more connected to their jobs and bosses when bosses treat them no different than they treat employees their age. They can immediately tell when you are pretending to know something about their culture and will cringe if you do.

3. Ditch the traditional scheduling.

Millennials have been making it clear for a while now that they would rather work in a job that allows them to work from home than a traditional job with a higher salary. Finding some way to allow your employees to integrate their work into their personal life increases motivation and efficiency.

4. Ease up on the dress code.

While it is true that a business owner has the right to have their employees dressing neatly and in the way that fits their business best – many Millennials find that strict dress codes are ineffectual and unnecessary. Their mood and motivation rise when they have more freedom to dress in the way they choose (appropriately of course).

5. Explain your vision and your values.

Millennials want to feel connected to a business and feel like what they are doing is making a difference. If they know exactly where the business should be heading and how their task at work is moving the company forward, they are more likely to feel connected and motivated.

It may seem crazy that Millennials can reshape the way we live and do business – but it is something we as humans go through each time a new generation transitions into the workforce. Not all generations will be the same as the one before them, and it is important that the new generation is welcomed with open arms for the smoothest transition possible.
